Preface

A Digital Commonplace Book

On these pages, you will find a digital version of my commonplace book. A commonplace book is a time-tested way to capture what you see, read, or hear, so that you can remember and use it later. When books were rare, commonplace books collected and organized favorite passages from books on loan from others. Today, the commonplace book functions more like a personalized encyclopedia.

Scattered among these words that I've gathered from others, you'll also find my attempts to join the conversation with these great writers and my encouragement for you to do the same. These are words that I have scavenged from my travels. My hope is that they will stir your affections for God, life, and others.

A Stream and a Garden

This site is like a stream. It functions like a typical chronological blog. The stream is fed by what I'm reading (book notes, Matter highlights, etc.).

Tolkien said that our writing "grows like a seed in the dark out of the {leaf-mould of the mind}: out of all that has been seen or thought or read, that has long ago been forgotten, descending into the deeps."

So I guess you could say that this site is my compost bin. There's a metaphor for you.

I also tend a garden of working notes. You can check that out here. It pulls notes from my Roam Research graph using Roam.Garden.

For now, I will be hosting this blog with Postach.io, which allows you to use an Evernote notebook as a lightweight CMS.

Contact Me

Thank for sticking with me thus far. I hope you find this somewhat unconventional book useful (or at least interesting). If you have any questions or comments, I'd love to hear from you. You can email me or message me.
