Glossary

A

anecdote /ˈa-nik-ˌdōt/

a short account of a true or fictional incident; often humorous, obscure, and difficult to substantiate.

In modern usage, the word may imply a lack of credibility, but not necessarily with malicious intent. Frequently, the exaggeration and drama are employed to enhance the entertainment value or ethical value. No one wants to hear a fish story about a six-pound Rainbow Trout. And your parents account of their 100-yard trek to school over a two whole speed bumps would surely fall flat as an illustration on overcoming adversity.

C

chrestomathy /kreˈstäməTHē/

a selection of choice literary passages, often used as an aid in learning a subject or language

Formed in the Greek by combining khrestos, meaning "useful", and mathein, meaning "to learn". Not to be confused with an anthology, which is less didactic and more nostalgic. On this site, I'm collecting what I like to think of as a Christian Chrestomathy. For many, the Christian worldview is like a foreign language, so the designation seems appropriate.
